UEFA Europa League How The Format Works

Not only will the name be changed, but the UEFA Europa League will see some changes in its format and structure as well. These changes will begin from the season 2009/2010 for what was said to be a test period of about three years or seasons. In a bid to provide the clubs with more matches to play and thus an opportunity to perhaps earn more revenue through gate receipts or television rights, the final group stage will now include 8 more teams to make it 12 groups of 4 clubs instead of the previous 40 teams that was split into an odd group of 8 groups of 5 clubs.
The clubs that qualify from each European league is decided using a very complicated system that differs from one league to another based on standing, ranking and reputation. Every club bar the current champions of the UEFA Europa League will have to go through the qualifying rounds at least once. However, since Shakhtar Donetsk will be participating in the Champions League for 2009/2010, every club for the first edition of the Europa League will go through at least one qualifier. The best leagues in Europe rated by UEFA will have two to three teams in the competition, plus their domestic Cup winners. The rest of the league will have only up to two teams qualifying each plus their domestic Cup winners. The weakest leagues in Europe, namely that of San Marino, Liechtenstein and Andorra, will only be allowed to have their domestic Cup winners taking part. To make up the batch of teams involved in the Europa League, the Fair Play winners will also be invited.
As with previous seasons, the clubs that fail to make it past the UEFA Champions League qualifiers at certain stages will be moved to enter the UEFA Europa League also at different stages. There will be a total of 28 such teams and they are given a second bite of the cherry to try to win something in Europe. It is also a continued move by UEFA to put some attention on the tournament and to keep interest high. All in all, it is a dizzying qualifying phase and group stage before the competition enters into its last knockout stages where the interest will probably peak as the best clubs make their way out of a very deep mix of teams from all over Europe.
