The UEFA Europa League will have its very first official edition for season 2009-2010 after taking over the UEFA Cup from its previous incarnation. There will be close to 200 clubs from all of Europe’s football leagues that will be invited and qualified for the UEFA Europa League, all of which will culminate in the first ever final in Hamburg, Germany in the stadium of HSH Nordbank Arena.
In terms of qualifying rounds, the UEFA Europa League will have a new format that starts with a total of 3 qualifying rounds. After that, the teams that survived all three rounds will proceed to the Playoff round which will also see the introduction of the first group of teams eliminated from the UEFA Champions League qualifiers. These teams will then play against each other to get a place in the Group Stage where there will be 12 groups of 4 teams each. The winners and runners-up from each of the 12 groups will then advance to the Final Phase where they are joined by another 8 teams that failed to go further in the UEFA Champions League.
The dates on which the various rounds and stages will be held are as follows (subject to change where necessary):
